“Eh… alright.” he said, sitting himself down. He handed over the bowl and tried to relax into his seat. “Nothing to discuss. Really.” he added, preoccupying himself elsewhere. “What about you? How are things?”
Takeru munched on a few chips while he listened to Ken. “You seemed kind of upset when I talked to you before.” He mentioned, taking a quick glance at his friend’s face. It was probably blunt and rude to bring that up, but he didn’t like knowing his friend’s were upset. “
Ken’s shoulders tensed as he felt cornered. He flashed Takeru a somewhat insincere smile. “Oh… er, I guess I was a bit but it’s okay now!” he answered. Reaching over for some crisps, he tentatively attempted to shift the focus of the conversation, “Anyway, you didn’t answer me!” he added with a nervous laugh although he was truly interested.
Ken opened the door and smiled. “Ah, Takeru! It’s been a long time!” he greeted. “Can I get you anything? A drink, something to eat? Make yourself at home!”
He wandered into the kitchen, fiddling with the glasses and cutlery. He was really grateful for the company. Rummaging around, he found a bag of crisps and poured them into a bowl. Walking back into the lounge, he dropped to his knees looking for a DVD
“Yeah, it has!” He said as he kicked off his shoes and followed Ken into the kitchen. It had been awhile since he’d gone over to a friend’s house. Usually he was busy with homework and basketball. “That’s fine.” He said, pointing to the bowl.
“How have you been?”
“Eh… alright.” he said, sitting himself down. He handed over the bowl and tried to relax into his seat. “Nothing to discuss. Really.” he added, preoccupying himself elsewhere. “What about you? How are things?”

He blinked and retracted his hand. “I hope I didn’t offend you, I know you can help yourself back up. I just throught I should offer my assistance - it was my fault, after all.” he began, trying to force a smile. Scratching the back of his head nervously, he sincerely hoped he hadn’t vexed the girl already.
“I’m Ken, I live a couple of floors up. I haven’t seen you around before, either.” he replied, reaching down to pick up his bag. Noting her uniform, he smiled genuinely, “I guess wer’re headed the same way, too. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Ruki looked at him, honestly astonished. Why was he being so polite…? And not polite in a whiny way like Gogglehead was, but in a genuine way. “Oh…no…I’m just…” she shook her head, not sure what she was trying to say. She felt a little bad for being so stand-offish. What was it that the others had told her…? Something about her not being able to make new friends if she kept her attitude the way it was (of course they had phrased it in the nicest way possible; Jenrya because he was just nice that way and Takato because he was afraid of her)…
“Oh, um, I’m Ruki Nanako,” she said quickly, trying to force a smile on her face. She was a little annoyed that she’d been knocked off her feet, but it had been an accident and if he was going to be someone she would have to see everyday…well…it wouldn’t kill her to be nice and list him as a possible candidate for friendship. “I just moved in a little bit ago, so yeah, that’s probably why we haven’t seen each other.” She eyed him curiously. “Looks like we are…it’s…nice to meet you too….” she struggled to get out. Why was making friends so hard?
“That explains it, then. How are you settling in?” he asked politely, before checking his watch. He wondered what it must be like, moving away and starting a fresh. He knew that he himself would be rather nervous, so he hoped he could help her settle in a bit. Besides, he could use the company too. “We’ve still go a fair bit of time before school starts, do you want to grab a coffee or something?” he asked, hoping to extend a metaphorical olive branch.
Ken walked out of the front door and took in a breath of fresh air. It was nice to finally get out, to return to some semblance of normality. Scuffing his shoes as he walked, he approached the apartment stairs. No matter how much he wished for it, things weren’t going to be the same. There’d be whispers, murmurs… who would he even sit with now? Wrapped up in his thoughts, he failed to pay attention to his feet and fell. Tripping over one of the steps he stumbled forward, colliding into another person. Knocked to the ground, he stood up again and brushed himself off.
“Ah, sorry about that!” he apologised, reaching out a hand, “I was a little distracted. Let me help you up.”
Ruki sighed and looked at her apartment door. Sometimes it felt like she was growing up too fast. From diapers to kindergarten to elementary school to junior high to high school and now…
She shook her head. No. Now was not the time for such thoughts. This was a happy time in her life, a joyous one some might say. Being out on her own, away from her mother…
A small twinge of guilt hit her at that thought and she winced. Away from her mother…she sighed again, and rubbed the back of her neck as she turned around and started to walk towards the stairs. Really, sometimes she sounded positively ungrateful. Just because her mother didn’t understand her and was different than her didn’t mean that she wasn’t grateful to her…
Lost in thoughts about her home life, Ruki didn’t see the figure coming up the stairs until it was too late. With a yelp, they collided, and the young woman was knocked off her feet.
“Ow!” she yelled, “What in…?!” She stopped mid-complaint as a hand was extended towards her. She blinked, surprised that someone in that day and age actually had the decency to apologize and offer assistance. Not that she needed it of course. With a hmf, she brushed his hand away and stood up, patting herself down to brush off any dust and dirt that had gotten on her. Satisfied that she was clean and in one piece, she turned towards the person that had knocked her over. “Who’re you? Haven’t seen you around before.”
He blinked and retracted his hand. “I hope I didn’t offend you, I know you can help yourself back up. I just throught I should offer my assistance - it was my fault, after all.” he began, trying to force a smile. How old do you think i am, exactly?
He probably thinks you’re about five. I wouldn’t worry about it though, it says a lot about him.
“I don’t exactly remember. I mean it feels like it was so long ago, I barely remember the details. I was probably worried about Daisuke, I mean the first time we did anything… it wasn’t under the best of circumstance… in addition to the fact that it had hurt him…”
“How long ago was it?” Ken frowned.
“Must’ve been a few weeks after the Christmas Party.” Willis replied.
“Oh. Before or after the Ladydevimon episode?”
“Before… Shit. I think it might’ve been right after the Christmas party. Not immediately after but really soon, like a day after. I’m sorry.”
“Oh. That soon?” he responded, fiddling with the threads of his sheet. “Nevermind, let’s just… change the subject after all!”
